Do not be deceived and taken captive by false religious practices. Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 2. Elemental spirits of the world. The correct meaning is that of local presiding deities, the national ‘gods’ who people believe to be ruling over the different areas and races of the world. 3. Syncretism. 2 Corinthians 11:1-4 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 There is one God and Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4. Insisting on asceticism. Colossians 2:16-23 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism. Asceticism is the severe self-discipline and avoidance of all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons. 5. Cardinal Virtues. Greek philosophers taught the chief natural virtues of justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude. 6. Biblical values Biblical values are all practiced in a faith relationship with God. They include things like: good over evil righteousness over sin truthfulness over deceit faithfulness over unfaithfulness prudence (looking to the eternal) vs temporary gains perseverance vs personal freedoms life over death 7. Aim at these things. Biblical virtues. 1 Corinthians 13:13 "And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. 2 Tim. 2:22 “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 8. A relationship. Romans 5:1-8 Through faith in Jesus we are justified and have peace with God. Through Jesus by faith we stand in Christ as recipients of grace, rejoice in the hope of sharing in the glory of God. We rejoice in suffering because it produces in us endurance, character, and hope that reassures us of God’s love lavished upon us in Christ. 9. Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you. Luke 6:27-36 Be like the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Conclusions: The evil spirits of this world seek to deceive and lead us away from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. They do this through false teachings of philosophy, human traditions, empty religious piety, syncretism, asceticism, and virtues of false spirituality. We are called to godliness through a relationship with Jesus. Through faith in Jesus, we are justified and have peace with God. Through Jesus by faith, we stand in Christ as recipients of grace, rejoice in the hope of sharing in the glory of God. We rejoice in suffering because it produces in us endurance, character, and hope that reassures us of God’s love lavished upon us in Christ.
