Phillip Sear plays a 1916 photoplay piece (a waltz) by the British composer Albert Ketèlbey (1875–1959). It was intended for 'Fashions and quiet scenes, etc.'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albert Ketèlbey was one of the best-known British light music composers, and is still remembered for such works as 'In a Monastery Garden' and 'In a Persian Market'. He wrote some piano music under the pseudonym Anton Vodorinski. "Ketèlbey was a pivotal figure in the development of music for silent cinema, particularly in the early decades of the 20th century. As early as 1910, he was appointed director of the orchestra at the Empire Cinema in Kingston upon Thames, and he soon became renowned for his ability to compose and arrange music that perfectly suited the mood and action of silent films. Ketèlbey compiled two influential collections specifically for cinema pianists: 'Kinemamusic' and 'New Moving Picture Music' (from which this piece comes). These works consisted of short, evocative piano pieces designed to be flexible and easy to perform, making them ideal for the varied and often improvised demands of silent film accompaniment. His arrangements were later expanded and orchestrated in the Bosworth’s Loose-Leaf Film-Play Music series, which included additional pieces and became the most popular music of its kind, earning Ketèlbey the highest income of any British composer at the time. Ketèlbey’s music was celebrated for its descriptive quality and accessibility, allowing pianists to quickly adapt to the changing scenes and emotions on screen. Titles such as Dramatic Agitato, Amaryllis (for “dainty, fickle scenes”), Mystery (for “uncanny and weird picturizations”), and Agitato Furioso (for “riots, storms, wars, etc.”) provided a ready-made library of moods and atmospheres for silent film accompanists. His compositions were published in versions for solo piano or small orchestras, catering to cinemas of all sizes and ensuring his music reached a wide audience. Ketèlbey’s contributions not only enriched the repertoire of silent cinema pianists but also set a standard for film music that was both practical and highly expressive, making his work indispensable during the heyday of silent film."
