The NEREUS project is a collaboration between the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) and the Surrey Space Centre (SSC), funded by the UNDP Ocean Innovation Challenge. The objective of the project is to develop a tool using Machine Learning to analyse satellite and other sources of data to detect anomalies in fishing vessels’ activities in our Exclusive Economic Zone. The output of this project will help Mauritius combat Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported fishing in the EEZ. This initiative is in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and promotes the use of satellite data for a more sustainable management of our marine resources. The training will provide an introduction to modern satellite radar imagery and interpretation, including distortions and artefacts typical of such space data. Ship detection with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images will constitute the core of this short course and will be presented using open-source data from the Copernicus constellation of satellites and the SNAP software.
