The branch to Lake Cargelligo opened 13 November 1917. During the first word war and after the initial wave of rail construction, where labour shortages and more astringent budgetary measures were adopted. It meant this branch from Ungarie was build to a minimum of standard compared to the golden age of the Whitton era. Nonetheless, the branch now a grain only affair has clung to existence and remains open, so far. Though once again the branch is threatened by beaurecrats and a rapacious road lobby who see benefit in turning it over to the trucking industry. And yes given the proximity to Manildra (closer by road connection) and other grain consumers it is a branch that may indeed have a limited future. There is an economic, if not a romantic or nostalgic argument for its closure on an economic basis. Personally I would not enjoy that outcome but I could see it happen. Places like Burgooney have a special place in my heart, but the rationalist could see that its days as an operating branch may be number. But this is for another time, though informs my decision to get out there when I can to see and hear train and the track as flexes and groans under the weight of a passing train. The rails in place have been there mostly since its opening over a hundred years ago. So while built with less excess (and less frippery) than the Whitton era, it was still built to last and last it has. And so this presentation is of the Lake Cargelligo yard itself and the shunt that precipitated the loading of a train. It is the end of the trip to the silos. Qube running their DL531s model 830 classes 864 (which ran on the Indian Pacific) and 872 (of Eyre Penisula fame), combined with the Junee Railway Workshops 48 class, 4814 and their 830 class 852. 852 is a special engine having operated in almost all states and territories (trying to confirm if it has been to Queensland, otherwise all states and territories rails have bee graced by this locomotive at some point in its long existence. Including its spell in Tasmania. 872 takes a staring role in moving the entire train through the yard so the other three engines can run around the train and then are re-attaching all four engines the arduous task of loading about about 30 minutes a wagon can commence. It is a testament to the patience and skill of the Graincorp crews and the train drivers that this landing is done professionally and another train is ready for port. This took place on the morning of 25th May 2023. Thanks to those who keep me in touch with movements on these far flung branches, it is where I enjoy the trains the most. 48s, or now 830s as well gracing the rails where they have run since their introduction at good pace to follow and photograph, in the magnificent country of the great state of New South Wales. The pleasure of being back in the bush. There are two more presentations of this train. Both a night running of train 9365 and the morning run towards the destination of Lake Cargelligo. I hope your enjoy this presentation and thank you for watching.
