The biblical story is not only something we study, it is a story we are invited to enter. In this video, we step back and ask: what does it mean for the church today to take our place in God’s unfolding drama? The Bible’s storyline has moved through Israel, Jesus, and the early church. Now we are called to continue that mission as God’s people in the world. First, we continue the mission of Israel: to be a light to the nations. Abraham was blessed to be a blessing. Israel was called to embody God’s creation intention for human life so that the nations would be drawn to the living God. That calling has now become the mission of the global church. Second, we continue the mission of Jesus: to make known the kingdom of God. Jesus fulfilled Israel’s vocation, gathered a community of disciples, and commissioned them to continue what he began. His mission was comprehensive, announcing God’s reign, demonstrating it in deeds of mercy and power, forming a community shaped by kingdom life, and suffering as he confronted idolatry and opposition. But Jesus does not give us a rigid blueprint to imitate mechanically. He calls us to continue his mission creatively and imaginatively within our own cultural contexts. Third, we continue the mission of the early church: to bear faithful witness to Jesus everywhere. Empowered by the Spirit, the early Christian communities became a foretaste of the coming kingdom—living previews of the future. One vivid way to picture this is as a movie trailer. A trailer is made up of real footage from a coming film, designed to stir interest in the full feature. In the same way, the church is meant to be a “trailer for the kingdom”—a real, Spirit-shaped glimpse of the future restoration God will one day bring in full. This witness cannot be reduced to evangelism alone (though evangelism is essential). It is as wide as life itself, because God’s salvation restores every dimension of human life under the lordship of Christ. In this video, you’ll learn: What it means to “take our place” in the biblical story today How the church continues Israel’s mission to bless the nations How we continue Jesus’ kingdom mission in our own cultural context Why the early church is a model of Spirit-empowered witness The meaning of the church as a “trailer” for the coming kingdom Why Christian witness must be as wide as all of life Jesus Christ is Lord over every square inch and every split second of human experience, and the church is called to embody that truth as a living preview of God’s coming restoration. ------ Calvin Seminary Website - https://calvinseminary.edu/ Programs Overview - https://calvinseminary.edu/seminary-p...
