Why should you aerate? Why should you overseed? ⬇️⬇️⬇️ ➡️These are two great questions. Aeration serves many benefits to your lawn. It helps reduce compaction, and it allows for more air, water and other nutrients to penetrate the soil at a deeper level. ➡️Overseeding is using a lower rate of grass seed and spreading it over top of your existing lawn. The way I do it, is in a multi-step order which I learned over the years from many other videos, landscapers and trial and error. I will scalp (mow the lawn very low without hitting your blades on the dirt), dethatch (getting the thatch layer removed) AERATE and then overseed. This year I waited a few days until I put down a starter fertilizer with mesotrione (prevents weeds) in it after seeding. This was introduced to me by a fellow instagramer Growingwithgreg (check him out). The theory is if I wait to apply fertilizer then the existing turf will not push a lot of growth before the seed has time to germinate and grow a little. It gives the new seed a better chance without getting choked out. I have done fertilization at the same time of overseeding on other properties and had equal success. It is up to you how you do it. ➡️I have other videos showing how I seed a lawn so be sure to check them out! ➡️Do you have to aerate and overseed every year? Depends. If you have a thick lawn already, you may be able to do aeration/overseed every other year. This could save you money.
