Railfanning the Joint Line at Palmer Lake, Colorado — one of the most famous shared freight corridors in the western United States. This stretch of railroad is jointly operated by BNSF and Union Pacific and runs along Colorado’s Front Range, handling heavy freight traffic moving between Denver, Pueblo, and beyond. The line dates back to the late 1800s, when competing railroads built parallel routes through the Palmer Divide. To reduce congestion and costs, the railroads eventually consolidated operations into the shared “Joint Line” that still operates today. Traffic was all BNSF on this trip, but there was still plenty of action set against the backdrop of the Rockies and the historic grades around Palmer Lake.
