Leonid Utyosov was born as Lazar Vaysbeyn in a poor Jewish family in Odessa. His real name became a death sentence — for his Jewish origins, he was beaten and expelled from school. To survive, he buried Lazar and created Leonid Utyosov — a Russian-sounding name. He became the first to smuggle jazz into the Soviet Union, charmed Stalin, and gave hope to millions. But behind the scenes, he was persecuted as a Jew: bans, purges, fear of arrest. He balanced between fame and death, every performance an act of survival. His music saved soldiers at the front, but the system wanted to destroy him. This is the story of an artist who outsmarted dictatorship, paying for it with his soul. The story of a man forbidden to be himself. #LeonidUtyosov #JewishJourney #jazz #USSR #Odessa #antisemitism #Stalin #history #music #survival #discrimination #artist
