On 7 July, the Delhi Police recorded Mohammed Nasir’s statement for the first time. The next day, he was given a copy of the FIR into the attack on him, though the police had registered it on 25 February. But the FIR was not based on Nasir's complaint. It omitted the offence of attempt to murder; contradicted the sequence of events narrated by Nasir and eyewitnesses; and incorrectly identified the location of the attack. The Caravan emailed detailed questionnaires to the Delhi Police twice. The police responded to the first email on the day Nasir was handed the FIR. The police said that it had acted in a “professional and impartial manner,” and mentioned the FIR it had registered. According to the police, a chargesheet had been filed, and five people arrested. Nasir said he has not received a copy of the chargesheet and that he was not consulted before the arrests. The police did not respond to the second mail about the delay in informing Nasir about the FIR, the failure to name the perpetrator whom Nasir identified in his complaint, and how the chargesheet had been filed without taking Nasir’s statement. Since its reincarnation in 2010 as India’s first magazine of long-form narrative journalism, The Caravan has established itself as one of the country’s most respected and intellectually agile publications, setting new benchmarks for the Indian and South Asian media.
