As cofounder of Glocalities, Martijn Lampert and his team conduct research globally, looking at lifestyles, values, and trends. Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s statement that like slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural, and that it can be eradicated by the actions of human beings, they, together with Global Citizen, recently published a report that shows that the world is pessimistic about aspects of that assertion. People simply find it too hard to see how poverty can be eradicated, particularly in one generation, as Mandela had challenged. The data, however, seems to suggest different possibilities. While Africa has made little headway, China and India have moved billions out of poverty, in recent years. But, with extreme inequalities stubbornly posing as the new Apartheid, Martijn feels strongly that we need to take action, and humanity needs to design a new movement, if we are to flourish. Enter Millennials. Martijn sees three opportunities: his research shows that millennials are the best educated generation in history, they have trust in science, and are the most willing to join campaigns and volunteer their activism — all potent ingredients for the actions that are needed. Given the status of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals as “the best plan for humanity and our planet to flourish,” the situation begs the question: how might we tap into the passions of Millennials to achieve these goals, and answer Mandela’s call.
