This episode demonstrates the practical applications of the theory of analysis of a continuous structure system in a simple and conventional Girder with Deck slab type superstructure of a bridge. With the intention to bridge the gaps between books and reality, this episode corelates the basics of continuous beam analysis and how this knowledge is utilized in designing the deck slab of the bridge spanning between the individual girders subjected to various load combinations. Additionally, another component of the bridge namely the cross girder is also designed after being analyzed as a continuous beam for two critical conditions i.e., service condition and jacking condition. While the service condition defines the bottom reinforcement of the cross beam, jacking case ensures sufficient reinforcement needs to be provided to cater for the hogging moment developed in the cross beam when the same is lifted up during bearing replacement. It has been ensured that a general overview of the design philosophy is presented in the episode along with proper explanation of concepts involved. At the end of the episode, comparative bending moment diagrams are also included to allow the fresh engineering graduates, get a deeper insight into the topic.
