Many horse owners believe their horse is “croup high” and assume it’s simply the way the horse is built. But very often, what we’re actually seeing isn’t conformation at all — it’s posture. Posture tells us a huge amount about how the horse is functioning. When the horse struggles to lift the forehand, open the base of the neck, and organise the body correctly, the hindquarters can appear higher than they truly are. In other words, what looks like a structural issue can actually be a functional one. Understanding the difference between posture and conformation is incredibly important. When we learn how to read the horse’s body properly, we can start to recognise compensation patterns, understand why they happen, and address the root cause rather than simply accepting that the horse is “built that way.” In this video, I explain one of the most common reasons horses appear croup high and what that can tell us about balance, posture, and movement. If you would like help understanding your own horse’s posture and movement patterns, I offer Posture and Movement Assessments, where we analyse your horse’s structure, balance, and loading patterns to identify areas that may be limiting performance or soundness.
