On long-section ultrasound imaging, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) appears as a slightly thickened, hypoechoic area located near the diaphragmatic hiatus, just posterior to the left liver lobe. In healthy imaging, the GEJ’s walls are well-defined and symmetric without irregular thickening or masses. However, imaging this area presents challenges due to overlapping structures, including the liver and diaphragm, as well as interference from gas within the stomach and esophagus, which can obscure views. Careful transducer adjustments, patient repositioning, or breath-holding techniques can help achieve clearer visualization. Imaging the GEJ is clinically significant for identifying conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia, and potential malignancies, allowing for early detection and guiding further treatment or diagnostic procedures.
