Recently, the U.S. Congress enacted changes to the requirements for obtaining and maintaining a federal Drug Enforcement Agency registration that allows prescribing of controlled substances. On December 29, 2022, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use. While that requirement is intended to insure that prescribers are treating opioid addictions appropriately, it goes beyond Schedule II narcotics; these prescribers may need additional education about overall substance abuse disorders (SUD), including alcohol. Many primary care physicians are lacking in the education and awareness of their options in diagnosing and treating patients for SUD, despite the fact that many options exist.
