The Game Boy port of Mortal Kombat II was developed by Probe Software and published by Arena Entertainment (in North America and Europe) and by Acclaim Japan for the Japanese market in 1994. The original arcade game was developed by Midway and released in 1993. A later release of the game included the first Mortal Kombat game along with it. Like the Game Boy port of the first game, a lot of elements from the arcade original had to be removed to fit on the cartridge space. Only The Pit II, Kombat Tomb and Goro Lair are present. Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Baraka, Rayden, Kintaro and Noob Saibot are also absent from the game. The move set was also simplified. Every basic move is implemented except the unique basic move most characters have. All punch and kick command are now simplified to two buttons, while the start button is used to block. Like the arcade, the game follows the storyline of the first game where Liu Kang won the tournament. Following that, Shang Tsung successfully convince Shao Khan to give him another chance. Instead of hosting a second tournament in Earthrealm, Shang Tsung would lure the heroes to the Outworld. This time, Shao Khan himself will be part of the tournament as the final opponent, hoping to crush any opposition to his world domination. After choosing the difficulty level and your character, you will face off against the cast. After defeating Shang Tsung, you will fight against Shao Khan, who is the only boss character in this port. It is also possible to fight Jade and Smoke if you fulfill the requirement before reaching the question mark. After winning the tournament, the game jumps to the credits as the character’s ending are not implemented. Unlike the first Mortal Kombat game, MK II is much less censored. Blood is the only element missing. The playable cast only has one fatality and a Babality each. They can also do the Kombat Tomb stage fatality but not the one in the Pit 2’s stage. Liu Kang’s fatality is the only one that is altered. When performing his Dragon Morph fatality, he will burn his opponent instead of eating half of him. Since its reuse some sprite from Scorpion’s fatality, it is assumed that it was done to save space in the cartridge and not for censoring purpose. Despite significant simplification of the game to fit on the cartridge, Mortal Kombat II is generally considered the best of the four games on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. The gameplay is fluid and there is no delay when performing moves. This is the only port, along with the Game Gear and Sega Master system version, where Jade can perform Kitana’s Fan swipe and air Fan Throw. The CPU will also perform Scorpion’s teleport move at time, which he never does in the other ports. Mortal Kombat II Playthrough Using the North American version of the game, the goal is to beat the game with each playable character, at the highest difficulty without getting hit once. Its secondary objective is to show as much as possible the various moves, fatality and secret in the game, such as fighting Jade and Smoke.
