LENIN'S PEOPLE FROM ANOTHER WORLD

The Russian Constituent Assembly Elections in November 1917 resulted in the victory of the Socialist Revolutionaries who received 15.9 million votes out of a total of 44 million that were cast. The Bolsheviks, who came second, received some 9.8 million votes. In all, the parties of the revolution commanded almost 80% of the votes cast. However, the difficulties in building a broad-based revolutionary coalition led to the Constituent Assembly only finally opening on the afternoon of January 18th. 1918 at the Tauride Palace in St. Petersburg. Whilst armed Red Guards cleared the streets of anti-Bolshevik protesters and surrounded the Palace, Victor Chernov, leader of the Socialist Revolutionaries, was elected president of the Constituent Assembly. As Lenin disdainfully looked on, and against the rising violence the Bolshevik faction within the Assembly and without, the Menshevik Irakli Tseretelli warned that ‘if the Constituent Assembly was destroyed then civil war will come to suck the life-blood of democracy’, and that consequently the Bolsheviks ‘would open the door to counterrevolution’. By the early hours of January 19th. Lenin and the Bolshevik faction had contemptuously withdrawn from the Assembly, leaving President Chernov to close the opening day of the Assembly by proclaiming the founding of the Russian Democratic Federated Republic. The Assembly was never to reopen following it’s immediate and ruthless suppression by the Bolsheviks. It was the time that Lenin spent at the Constituent Assembly that led him to begin his ‘People From Another World’, published in Pravda on 21st January 1918, with the ‘the old Latin phrase: Friends, another day lost!’.
