"Otis, I'm dependin' on you..." Set against the sweltering, dust-choked backdrop of Midland, Texas in 1954, "The Midland Spring" is a soulful journey from the crushing weight of earthly duty to the liberating power of Divine Grace. This track tells the story of Otis, an oil field worker trapped by a "debt of the name" left by his father. He spends his days drilling into the hard Texas earth, believing his only value lies in his productivity and his ability to "keep the pressure up." It isn't until an encounter with a Stranger in the desert heat that Otis realizes he has been drilling in a "dry hole" of his own making. Produced by: New Song New Heart Records Genre: 1960s Narrative Soul / Delta Blues / Gospel --- THE LYRICS & THE WORD THE BURDEN OF PERFORMANCE Lyric: "Papa said, 'Otis, I'm dependin' on you / To keep the pressure high and pull the family through.'" Biblical Reference: Matthew 11:28-30. We often carry burdens of expectations--both from our past and ourselves--that were never meant for us. Jesus calls the weary to find rest in Him, trading a heavy yoke for His light one. THE DRY HOLE OF STRIVING Lyric: "Thinking if the oil came screaming, I'd finally be free / From the ghost of the man I was never meant to be." Biblical Reference: Romans 3:20 / Galatians 2:16. Otis represents the struggle of "works." He thinks success (the gusher) will wash away his shame, but "by the works of the law, no human being will be justified." THE LIVING WATER Lyric: "I got the Living Water and the Well won't run dry." Biblical Reference: John 4:13-14. Like the woman at the well, Otis is looking for satisfaction in something that only leaves him thirstier. Jesus offers the water that becomes "a spring of water welling up to eternal life." THE NEW IDENTITY Lyric: "I ain't a slave to the pressure... I'm a son of the King." Biblical Reference: Romans 8:15. We have not received a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" --- LYRICS (Condensed) [Intro - Spoken] August in Midland... it gets heavy. Papa left me a name and a debt. He said it was all on me. But I was just drilling for a ghost in a dry hole. [Verse 1] The sun is a branding iron... Papa's voice is the chain... I'm a hired hand on the land where I was born. [Chorus] He said, "Otis, I'm dependin' on you..." But I'm choking on the sand... Then a Man walked out of the heat... He said, "Stop digging for a life you can't buy." [Bridge] I threw down the wrench... I let the engines die... I ain't a slave to the pump... I'm a son of the King! [Outro] No more black gold. No more dry holes. Just the Water. Just the Peace. --- #ChristianMusic #SoulMusic #GospelBlues #NewSongNewHeart #1960sVibe #MidlandTexas #LivingWater #GraceAlone #Otis #BibleStory #Faith
