The group consisted of vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. Sumner and Hook formed the band after attending a June 1976 Sex Pistols concert. While Joy Division's first recordings were heavily influenced by early punk rock, they soon developed a sparse sound and style that made them one of the pioneering groups of the post-punk genre and movement. Closer is their second and final studio album, released on 18 July 1980 by Factory Records. It was released two months after the suicide of the band's lead singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. The album reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart and peaked at No. 3 in New Zealand in September 1981. Closer was also named NME Album of the Year. Atrocity Exhibition is the opening track written by Ian Curtis, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner. The song title was inspired by the 1970 J. G. Ballard collection of short stories, of the same name. Ian Curtis – vocals Bernard Sumner – bass guitar Peter Hook – guitar Stephen Morris – drums Lyrics [Verse 1] Asylums with doors open wide Where people had paid to see inside For entertainment they watch his body twist Behind his eyes he says, "I still exist" [Chorus] This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside [Verse 2] In arenas he kills for a prize Wins a minute to add to his life But the sickness is drowned by cries for more Pray to God, make it quick, watch him fall [Chorus] This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside [Bridge] This is the way, this is the way This is the way, this is the way [Chorus] This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside [Verse 3] You'll see the horrors of a faraway place Meet the architects of law face to face See mass murder on a scale you've never seen And all the ones who try hard to succeed [Chorus] This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside This is the way, step inside [Outro] And I picked on the whims of a thousand or more Still pursuing the path that's been buried for years All the dead wood from jungles and cities on fire Can't replace or relate, can't release or repair Take my hand and I'll show you what was and will be
