J-MASS INSTAGRAM: @jmassofficial The official theme song for my channel, “City of Steam”, was originally composed by my friend, Jesse Walsh! Check out the full song here on his YouTube channel: • [J-MASS THEME] City of Steam In the hamlet of Thiells, located within the town of Haverstraw, New York, sits the dormant, crumbling ruins of a former psychiatric hospital with a dark past. Letchworth Village, as it was once known, was constructed in 1911, pledging to provide humane treatment for the physically and mentally disabled. Inspired by the ideas of mental health advocate William Pryor Letchworth (of whom the hospital was named after), the institution aimed to serve as a beacon of reform, at a time when the mentally disabled were often subject to mistreatment and discrimination. Letchworth Village grew rapidly: at its peak, the over 2,000-acre campus consisted of 130 buildings, constructed in a neoclassic style made of fieldstone. Despite its promising start, things began to go awry for the institution: by 1944, the population ballooned as serious overcrowding occurred, resulting in cramped conditions and less housing space. Coupled with the understaffed institution struggling to provide adequate treatment, the conditions faced by these patients worsened significantly, and many suffered from severe neglect, abuse, and mistreatment. The buildings at Letchworth Village were incredibly unsanitary, with patients often living naked in filthy and squalor, succumbing to their own illnesses further with no treatment or care. Moreover, allegations of misconduct between staff become more pronounced. By the 1970s, following an exposé that shed light on the disturbing conditions at the hospital, reforms began being implemented to rehouse patients and provide better treatment. As the population declined throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, Letchworth Village was permanently closed in 1996, leaving behind dozens of decaying buildings. Today, while much of the campus still stands, many buildings are completely abandoned and deteriorating, while only a select few have been redeveloped. This was actually my second time exploring Letchworth Village! I first visited in November 2024, but I didn’t film my exploration—something I would later regret! Two months later, in January 2025, and I’m back once again to explore this fascinating piece of New York’s history! Letchworth Village is huge, with many abandoned buildings to explore. These include dormitories, a hospital, an assembly hall, a laundry building, and even a synagogue. Despite the vast number of abandoned buildings I explore on this campus, there are still many more to see—I barely even scratched the surface! Interestingly, this campus is entirely open to the public, and you are free to legally walk around the paths and view the buildings and structures from outside. If you ever find yourself in the Hudson River Valley region of New York, I would highly suggest giving this spot a visit, especially if you love urban exploration! Of course, due to Letchworth Village’s dark and disturbing past, it is important to be respectful and reverent when exploring, and to keep those who suffered in mind. In fact, I ended my visit by checking out the Old Letchworth Village Cemetery in nearby Stony Point, New York, where many of the patients who suffered at this institution are now buried. May they never be forgotten.
