How to do CPR is an essential core skill of any certified first aid training course. Being in the marine industry means that you need to be prepared if something goes wrong or someone in your care becomes unconscious. At Flying Fish we use the simple easy to apply formula in the situation of finding an unconscious non breathing casualty. This formula is designed to primarily keep you safe and ensure that the stages are followed in a logical order: DR ABC Danger: Stop before you enter a situation and check for danger. Remember this, YOU are the most important person in the situation. Remove the danger if needed, you may need to remove the casualty from the danger i.e. out of the water or a busy road. If it is not safe do not proceed. Response: What happens when you tap their shoulders and speak into both of their ears. Do they show any signs of life? Is there any visible evidence or smell as to why they are in that position? If there is no response at all now is the time to SHOUT for Help. Airway: Open the airway by placing one hand on the top of the head tilting it back with two fingers under the chin. Have a look inside to see if anything is blocking it. Breathing: Look listen and feel for breathing for 10 seconds. You are looking for 2-4 normal breaths within that time. Please note; random gasps do not count as normal breaths and can be a sign that the person is in trouble. If there is no breathing, this person needs CPR and an Ambulance and Defib should be called for. CPR: Make sure the casualty is on a firm surface away from danger and they will ideally not need to be moved until help arrives. In this video we focus on a DRY LAND ADULT CASUALTY.
