A peripheral endarterectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove plaque buildup (atherosclerosis) from the inner lining of arteries in the peripheral vascular system, outside of the heart and brain. These arteries are often found in the legs (femoral, popliteal, etc.) or arms. The buildup of plaque can lead to reduced blood flow, causing symptoms like pain, numbness, or weakness in the affected limb. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the affected artery, removes the plaque, and then closes the artery. This helps to restore proper blood flow to the affected area, relieving symptoms and reducing the risk of complications such as tissue damage or limb loss. Peripheral endarterectomy is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as angioplasty or bypass surgery, depending on the severity and location of the arterial blockage.
