2022 Virtual Symposium – Inspiring & Motivating Health Care Professionals - Brain Tumours

This year, our symposium will focus on “Inspiring & Motivating Health Care Professionals.” HCPs have been pushed to the edge by the pandemic. There have been waves of grief, PTSD and burnout and we want to help address the continued needs of our health care community. HCPs are expected to be called on to navigate new waves from new variants and are being asked to tap into an even deeper reserve of resiliency and skill. PRESENTERS: Dr. Stephen Liben Dr. Stephen Liben will start the event with a focus on Mindful Self-Compassion and how to care for ourselves alongside caring for others. Despite many positive medical advances and better survival rates, the rate of professional burnout and general unhappiness in health care providers has never been greater. Why this disconnect between improving outcomes for patients on the one hand and increasing health care provider disease on the other? Mindful self-compassion, an evidence-based set of learnable skills, is one way for us to be less stressed, more resilient, and happier in our work. Dania Othman Following Dr. Liben’s workshop, a personal story of hope with Dania Othman, one of our 2021 Youth Education Award Recipients and brain tumour survivor. We will chat with Dania who is a first-year sociology student at the University of British Columbia and plans to pursue a degree in law. Dania was diagnosed with disseminated low-grade glioma in 2011. Despite her medical adversities, she has made peace with her illness by giving back to her community and helping others. She has contributed over 1000 hours of volunteering in school, community, and national organizations. Currently, she serves as a Student Ambassador at UBC. Through her leadership roles, Dania has developed a great passion for public speaking. When she is not busy digging into a good book, she enjoys trying out new recipes, hiking with friends, and cheering on the Vancouver Canucks at local hockey games. Dr. Liang Zeng Since this is a Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada symposium, we thought it was important to include an update on some brain tumour treatments as well. Also joining us, is Dr. Liang Zeng, Radiation Oncology Fellow from the Odette Cancer Centre. Dr. Zeng will share exciting recent advancements in imaging technology combined with radiotherapy units that have allowed for the first time, visualizing treatment effects and brain tumour motion during a course of treatment. This has the potential to maximize control of tumours, whilst minimizing short-term and late-term side effects. Sunday Ajak Finishing off our event, will be an inspirational presentation by Sunday Ajak, a 23-year-old motivational speaker, activist, and student at Western University studying Social Justice. At Sunday’s core, he is a writer who loves to bring his thoughts into reality. Sunday says that he “has a dream that one day my speeches will change the world, and I live in each moment trying to make that a reality. Regardless, if I can use my passion for speaking to positively impact at least one person, then I am living a happy life. I only seek to help those who may need it because in the end; I do to.” Sunday has written a special spoken word piece for YOU – our amazing health care professionals. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Connect with Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada: Facebook:   / braintumourfdn   Twitter:   / braintumourfdn   Instagram:   / braintumourfdn   Call Toll Free 1-800-265-5106 or locally 519-642-7755 - call with any questions and connect today!
