0:00 - Intro - This is probably the most effect shots I've done for a single story - a whopping 60 in total! And it's the longest it's by far taken from start to completion (getting it past the copyright bot has taken longer than usual too!) 0:09 - Skybase One The model shots were quite good in this story, but the lemon meringue planet just had to go. I replaced it with a desaturated, cloudy shot of Earth from space. 0:18 - Porthole view When the Doctor and Jo get a better view of the planet later on Jo makes a comment that they can see more in the "daylight", meaning that the view they saw here must be at "night" and the planet would be mostly obscured. And since there was a bright reflection of the sun on the porthole glass, it made sense that they'd be viewing the planet at sunrise/sunset (there's also a second light suggesting two suns, so I added a second that looked a bit further in the distance). 0:29 - Ky transmats I've done a few transmat shot before (note: in classic Dr. Who they're always "transmats", never "teleports"), and as I couldn't figure out what to do this time I thought I'd go full Trek-Transporter! 0:41 - The Marshal tries to open the box 0:50 - "I said fire!" Th great thing about the blasters in this story is that I didn't need to add any extra flashes to them, since they already had their own (similar to the ones in Planet of Evil)! This in-shot effect really enhances the added effects, and it's a shame the technique wasn't used more throughout classic Who. 0:55 - Jo & Ky argue in transmat I still can't figure out how they're arguing at the same time as transmatting 1:04 - Guard take a shot at Jo & Ky 1:08 - Inside the box 1:14 - Jaeger's arrows This scene has always bugged me, and I wasn't going to bother trying to fix it since I knew it would be hard work. It was, but I'm glad I did it. 1:22 - A shot in the dark 1:26 - Doctor struggles in transmat 1:37 - Firestorm from cave The novelisation describes the storm much more like a lightning storm, so it made sense to add some lightning bolts. 1:50 - Firestorm & Skybase 1:55 - Jo in radioactive chamber In the novelisation, the caves are described as almost blindingly bright, so I added some extra glow and lens flare. In an attempt to enhance the CSO work I also changed Jo's hue so that she matches the changing colours of her surroundings. 2:07 - Guard shoots at Varan 2:26 - Guard shoots at Stubbs 2:18 - Doctor & Sondergaard in radioactive chamber Again, the novelisation describes the caves as ultra-bright, which is why Sondergaard collapses (the Doctor is immune), and there's no mention of... well whatever those things are flying past them. I blurred them out a bit to make them look less like bits of tissue paper. 2:40 - Doctor finds the crystal 3:11 - Doctor escapes from radioactive chamber 3:17 - Struggle and hull breach! This was the scene that probably put me off doing this story for almost a year (the HD release changed my mind), but I knew that if I was going to add new effects I was going to have to tackle this scene. Once I'd worked out my approach it was relatively straightforward - just hours and hours of masking (especially having to do the Marshal's hair frame-by-frame!), then a new starfield that tracked with the camera, a subtle wind effect and some camera shake. I considered adding the planet in the background but I think it would have detracted from the danger of being sucked into the inky blackness of space. I probably spent the best part of a week on it, and I'm quite happy with the result. 3:46 - Guards shoot at Dr in transmat 4:00 - Guards transmat 4:04 - The Hyperion This wasn't a very impressive looking ship to begin with and there wasn't really much I could do other than stabilise it and as a new starfield. 4:09 - Stubbs & Cotton battle with Marshal 4:23 - Corridor chase 4:31 - Particle reversal beam 4:39 - Hyperion docks with Skybase One 5:01 - Refuelling & escape from thaesium chamber 5:12 - Mutt transmats 5:22 - Marshal kills mutt 5:25 - Ky's transformation Transition shots are always quite tough, especially when the shots don't line up (which is practically all the time in classic Who!). I applied a similar approach to the hand becoming a claw as I had for the various Keys to Time. 5:58 - Ky's journey Ky's movement around the Skybase didn't work very well because the depth was off and there was no sense of Ky being "within" the scene. So I masked out Ky, created some filler backgrounds (which were mercifully static), and re-inserted Ky with depth and movement that felt more in line with the scene. I also added foreground obstacles in the corridor and an effect as he passed through walls. 6:10 - Ky destroys Marshal I didn't need to add much to this shot as it was already quite well executed. I just enhanced the beam from Ky a little and added a silluette to the Marshal as he vanishes. 6:23 - Final shot of Skybase One
