Pakistan's economic lifeline, the trucking industry, has ground to a halt as transporters go on an indefinite strike in Lahore [00:29]. Our team visits the protest site at the Truck Adda (Truck Depot) near Data Darbar to hear the drivers' devastating stories. These transporters, who are the backbone of the economy, are being pushed to the brink by relentless harassment, corruption, and arbitrary fines from traffic and motorway police. Key Issues Raised by the Drivers: Excessive and Unjustified Fines: Drivers are facing fines of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 per trip [00:45], sometimes at checkpoints every 50 kilometers [05:25], making their work unprofitable. Arbitrary Regulations: Fines are given for contradictory reasons, such as being fined for not having fog lights, and then being fined later for having them [11:09]. Police Misconduct and Corruption: Drivers allege that police take bribes of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 to release impounded vehicles [01:58], and that their licenses are sometimes taken despite having all valid documents, including multiple province permits [16:44]. No Safety on Motorways: The drivers claim motorways lack safety; they face theft and robbery, yet police are focused only on issuing fines [04:42]. The Final Ultimatum: Drivers state they will not resume work until the government addresses their demands, even if the strike lasts six months [08:57]. The drivers appeal directly to the government, including Maryam Nawaz Sharif [01:17], urging them to create a fair and just system before the country's transportation network completely collapses.
