This is our adventure with Menai Laurence to the Horse and Hound Festival of eventing 2019, which took place at Keysoe over the May bank holiday weekend. I have wanted to do this show for so long but never been able to, so it was a really exciting weekend! The first day Friday was arrival day, my mum picked me up with the trailer straight from work at 12.30 and it took us around 4 hours to travel down to Keysoe, it was a really good journey with no traffic at all! When we got there we got the stable ready for Laurence, there are around 200 newly built permanent show stables at Keysoe, all with full rubber matting which was great and he was in a block with loads of others so settled in straight away! The only annoying thing is he kept knocking his water over! Then we went to get our welcome pack from the veranda which had loads of goodies inside including a gorgeous plaque and all important treats for Laurence! I then got Laurence tacked up ready for a quick leg stretch and arena familiarisation, and after this was welcome drinks and a rider briefing. Me and mum then took the dogs for a walk and got a first glimpse of the XC course, and then got our trailer set up and used our awning for the very first time, setting up camp for the weekend! On Saturday I was so excited for the first day of competing and we forgot to close the skylight in the trailer, meaning I woke up at 4.30 rearing to go! We did a lovely dressage test to score 29.5, which put us in 4th place after day 1. Later in the day we had a XC course walk with 4* event rider Milla Lanni which was really confidence giving and at night there was great entertainment with a hog roast and a band! Day 2 brought the buzz of XC excitement, and Laurence who is usually used to doing all 3 disciplines in one day was feeling very good in himself and fresh as a daisy! We made sure to keep him hydrated by using Horse quencher, if you haven't heard of it, I'd highly recommend it for any fussy drinkers or if you want to make sure your horse stays hydrated! The XC course had a few tricky questions and combinations but Laurence absolutely flew round with no problems at all inside the time and we moved up to 3rd! The XC course even went into the arena, and we missed the rain too. In the afternoon whilst Laurence was resting, we went to see my old pony Pippi Longstockings which was amazing, she was exactly the same and I even got to ride her and have a little jump! When we got back there was celebratory drinks and a fun quiz. The 3rd day was the trot up, where it was nice to get dressed up and there were so many lovely outfits, and also the last of the 3 phase... the show jumping! It was run in reverse order of merit and was so nerve-wracking as there was only a pole between the top few, but my amazing Laurence pulled a beautiful clear out the bag to stay in 3rd and we won so many incredible prizes, including a pair of Ariat short boots, Bolesworth tickets, Aerochill cooling boots, a Cavalor bucket full of goodies, a Likit starter pack and HY gloves, headcollar and leadrope!! It was an amazing weekend with so many memories made and I was so glad I could take part, we may be back next year! :) #HHFOE19
