Here's a clip that was used in The Animal Rights Show (29-11-20 - full show link below.) As ever, The Animal Rights Show is interested in social movements, counter-movements, and language use. Social movements are claims-makers in society and that means the language social movement participants use is not only very important but critical and political. This clip includes Sandra Higgins of the amazing Go Vegan World campaign (you may have seen their huge billboards, bus ads, and on-field ads during international rugby matches). Check out https://goveganworld.com/ Here, the presenter of a national TV show in Ireland, Claire Byrne, stops Sandra twice to clarify her language that she's using about other animals. Then, Sandra's opponent makes points about language and finally, when the conversation is opened out to the audience, an animal use representative does the usual language trick that animal users do - slides the conversation from animal rights (Sandra's position) to animal welfare. For those who violate the rights of other animals, they'll talk about animal welfare all day and night. That's the language they understand. What they cannot tolerate - and have no answer to - is animal rights. That's exactly why animal advocates should think carefully about prioritising welfare language based on claims such as "don't be cruel," "have mercy on the animals," and "be an animal lover."
