Leading up to Labor Day 2024, we made our annual visit to see trains at the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Located in McMillan Park and held each year surrounding Labor Day, Old Threshers features something for everyone that wants to experience old-time machinery and American life from over a hundred years ago. Trains play a major role at the Reunion, with the Midwest Central Railroad carrying passengers around the park on a mile of track, that reaches several other Old Threshers attractions. This year, we saw the railroad’s 2-6-0 steam engine 6 pulling trains, with the assistance of diesel-hydraulic units 14 and D-9. For those camping at the Reunion, the Midwest Electric Railway is a separate line circling the campgrounds and features a varied collection of historic trolleys and streetcars in operation. We saw three cars making their rounds on the railway this year – 1945, 320, and 1718. This program combines not only trackside views but also rides aboard both railroads during the 2024 Reunion, all while making stops at various points of interest at Old Threshers, including Printer’s Hall, the Steam Powerhouse, Horse Barns, and the Log Village. We also witness one of many mock train robberies that take place in the wild-west North Village after the train pulls into town.
