The ZAZIBONA initiative, embedded within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Framework for Regulatory Harmonization, represents a significant collaborative effort to streamline the medicines registration process across Southern Africa, including South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Launched in 2013 by Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia, ZAZIBONA has expanded to include all 16 SADC member states and focuses on joint dossier assessments and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections to reduce duplication and accelerate market access. By 2025, the initiative had jointly assessed over 350 products through 44 sessions, effectively building regulatory capacity by training more than 150 National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) staff across the region. Despite these clear successes, challenges & opportunities remain in fully translating ZAZIBONA recommendations into national registrations within optimal timelines across these countries. This forum will explore the experiences, challenges, and opportunities of the registration pathway in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
