This interview with actor and director Frederick O’Neal (1905-1992) was recorded in early December 1962 on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus. O’Neal was a visiting professor in the Theater Department in the 1962 fall quarter. In addition to teaching, he played the role of Cesar in Marcel Pagnol’s “Marseilles” that was performed by the Southern Players in October of that year. He talks about his career, time at SIU, and the issues facing Black actors at the time. A pioneer Black actor, O’Neal helped organize the Aldridge Players in St. Louis (1927), founded the American Negro Theater in Harlem, NY (1940), co-founded the British Negro Theatre (1948), and was the first African American President of the Actors’ Equity Association (1964–1973). Some of his credits include Broadway’s “Anna Lucasta” (1944), the stage and film productions of “Take a Giant Step” (1953, 1959), and television’s “Car 54, Where Are You?” (1961-1963). Funding for digitizing this 16mm film was made possible by a grant from the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board.
