From K-Pop to K-Printing: California passes 'Jikji Day' to celebrate Korea's world-first printed book '한국 금속활자 알린다' 美 캘리포니아, '직지의 날' 제정 California has become the first authority in America to introduce "Jikji Day," which celebrates South Korea's ancient book,"Jikji," as the world's oldest existing metal-printed book. While many acknowledge that Johannes Gutenberg printed the 42-line Gutenberg Bible in Germany about 1455, it remains largely unknown outside of East Asia that Jikji, the world's oldest surviving book printed from moveable metal type, was printed 78-years earlier in Cheongju, South Korea. Under a resolution introduced by Californian Assemblyman Steven Seokho Choi, the U.S. state of California will celebrate "Jikji Day" on every September 4th from this year, going forward. We discuss the significance of Korea's printing invention and what it means to us in the modern day with the very person behind the designation of Jikji Day Dr. Steven Seokho Choi, member of the California State Assembly representing the 68th Assembly District. Prior to Jikji Day, we already have Kimchi Day which was designated for 22 November led by a proposal of yours.
