The City of Big Bear Lake is responsible for snow plowing within the City’s jurisdiction. Our three key objectives are to maintain safe access for emergency services, to provide reasonably safe driving conditions, and to maintain access to businesses and services. When snow accumulation nears 3 inches, plowing resources are activated around the clock until streets are passable, and no further significant snowfall is forecasted. Plowing is performed by City staff, Caltrans, and other local partners. Major plowing occurs overnight and in the early morning to minimize traffic disruption and maximize work efficiency. Streets are typically plowed every twelve hours, pushing snow to the right side, creating berms across property frontages and driveways. To support efficient plowing and safety of both snow plow operators and residents, please follow these helpful tips: 1. Do not park on streets or rights-of-way – you may be cited or towed. 2. Avoid placing items in front of your property during plowing. Place trash cans out as close to collection time as possible. 3. Keep children indoors for safety while plows operate. 4. Do not attempt to interact with plow operators; direct questions to the Public Works department. 5. During sustained snowfall, clear driveways and property only when necessary, as ongoing plowing may create additional berms. If possible, wait until the City’s efforts are completed before clearing your property. The City of Big Bear Lake stands ready to serve the community during winter snow conditions.
