While I do not discount the skill of autobody painters on much more complicated repairs, I hope this video shows that if you are willing to put in the effort and make bold choices, you can end of saving a lot of money, time, and effort. While my patience for sanding is something I need to work on, the rear cap of this 2009 Cardinal 5th wheel is dramatically improved not just repaired. In this video, I prep the rear cap for paint by grinding the previous fiberglass repair, adding filler to restore the smooth body lines, repair the holes for the now removed ladder, and sand and sand and sand. Once the primer was sprayed on, blocked out the primer for one final smooth finish and applied a "drop" coat of dark paint to help with coverage on the final paint and then clear coat with a higher quality urethane. While I did not show the painting because I know how spiteful and all-knowing some people on the internet are, the key to laying the color down was 2 good coats and then a 3rd coat with the gun further away and misting the whole section with about half triger on the feed gun. Clear is different. The first coat will look awful and orange peel and is nothing more than a primer for the second coat. When applying the second coat the key is to keep a "wet" edge and always work from the wet edge until the entire coat is finished. Check your application with the reflection as you are spraying. Clear will still "run" for quite some time after spraying. This rear cap I sprayed 4 coats because I was unhappy with the bad application of the 3rd coat.
