I appreciated Goobie and Doobie's courageous confession of how he went from residency training to surgical practice only to conclude that spine surgery is not helping his patients. He retreats to the woods as an unemployed neurosurgeon. Many aspects of his story resonated with me. 1. We are both Asian and studied at elite undergraduate universities 2. We both loved Brain Computer Interface 3. We both recognized the challenges of Spine Surgery, and unlike Dr. Goobie, I migrated to all brain surgery especially skull base surgery, rather than stick with all spine surgery. However, I am responsible for training medical students and neurosurgery residents. Hence, I offer my own response and my own advice to trainees. 1. Keep Moving - Neurosurgery is a bigger field than just spine or brain. 2. Always keep patients first - which Dr. Goobie has done 3. Take care of your self before trying to take care of others! TYPO - primum non nocere (not docere) WARNING: This video represents my opinion only. I do not represent the University of Pennsylvania, and although I am wearing hospital scrubs, my message is NOT endorsed by Penn Medicine.
