Join my newsletter for clinical insights on binocular vision and reading: https://robertlederman.com Dyslexia is widely understood today as a language-based learning difficulty. But reading is also one of the most demanding visual tasks we perform. Inspired by Professor John Stein’s work on the visual aspects of dyslexia, this video discusses why the visual side of reading should not be ignored. Before language processing can occur, the words on the page must first enter consciousness through the visual system. Reading requires: • precise binocular coordination • accurate eye movements from word to word • stable accommodation (focusing) • visual endurance for sustained near work If these systems are not functioning efficiently, readers may experience: • words moving on the page • intermittent blur • double vision • visual fatigue while reading This does not mean dyslexia is primarily visual. But it does mean we cannot ignore the visual entry point of the reading process. Reading is the meeting place between vision and language. As optometrists, we are uniquely trained to assess the visual demands of reading through evaluation of: • binocular vision • accommodation • eye movement control • visual efficiency These topics are part of every optometrist’s training, yet in everyday practice they are sometimes left behind. Reading is not a niche activity. It is one of the most visually demanding tasks humans perform. A thorough visual assessment may lead to practical solutions such as: • appropriate spectacle correction • improved ergonomics for reading • environmental adjustments • optometric vision therapy For some struggling readers, visual factors may be only part of the story. For others they can represent a significant barrier. But without evaluating the visual system, we simply cannot know. #optometry #binocularvision #visiontherapy #dyslexia #readingdifficulties #visualprocessing #developmentaloptometry
