(26 Mar 1998) English/Nat President Bill Clinton arrived in South Africa early on Thursday for a three-day visit. Clinton is the first U-S president to visit South Africa and his visit marks the country's transition from apartheid to democracy under Africa's elder statesman Nelson Mandela. It is thought that Clinton, who was met by South African Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo, was carrying a message of support for democracy, human rights and economic reform. President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary arrived in Cape Town early on Thursday for the fourth leg of their six state tour of Africa. The Clinton's were welcomed by South African Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo. Clinton is the first U-S president to visit South Africa and it marks the country's transition from apartheid to democracy. U-S officials said a key purpose of the Clinton visit was to call attention to the country's peaceful transition from white minority rule as an example of ethnic reconciliation for both Africa and the United States. During his three-day stay he will address parliament and meet President Nelson Mandela. A variety of groups are also clamouring for the U-S president's attention. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Clinton is here to rape our country. We don't need him in South Africa, he's not wanted here." Clinton's meeting with President Mandela will be held on Thursday. Mandela is expected to present Clinton with the Order of Good Hope, South Africa's highest honour for foreigners. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It is going to be the proudest, one of the proudest moments which South Africans I hope are going to have. To be able to welcome a man who has been so generous in supporting us."
