Before we moved to Kyoto, the idea of "home" always felt a bit elusive. In Tokyo, my wife and I lived above our coffee shop—Deakin St coffee stand—and the only thing separating our private life from the customers was a metal staircase in the middle of the cafe. I can still hear the sound of kids clambering up those steps while I was busy making coffee for other customers. Then in London, home was a narrowboat, where the morning started with the sound of coots on the river. It probably explains why I’m so drawn to the stillness of the houses here in Kyoto. This video is an exploration of two specific examples of home: Kawai Kanjiro’s house and the Silver Pavilion. I’ve also included a few glimpses into our own place. I’ve woven in some thoughts from Marcus Aurelius and William Morris. They both seemed to understand that a home is a place to "retire into yourself." I’m curious to know what home sounds like to you? Is it the kettle boiling, a friend’s laughter, or just the silence when the door finally clicks shut?
