Let's make a few assumptions first to begin the argument: Arjun and Indrajit both are at their prime form and have approached the battle field with their respective knowledge of divine weapons and warfare to their utmost limits. Arjun is not having Sri Krishna as his charioteer and neither is he using the Divine Chariot with four white horses and a flag with Hanumanji present in it. Indrajit is not mounting the Divine Chariot promised by Lord Brahma on the successful completion of Nikumbhila Devi's Yagna. Now comparing them Warrior Status: Arjuna belongs to the Maharathi class of warriors. Indrajit, on the other hand was one of his own class. The only warrior to be classified as an Atimaharathi. As a matter of fact an Atimaharathi can simultaneously fight twelve warriors of the Maharathi rank! Weapons: Arjuna possessed the knowledge of many celestial weapons including the deadly Brahmastra and he had also obtained Lord Shiva's most destructive missile Pashupatastra from the Lord himself. His Akshay quiver which was gifted by Varundev, never fell short of arrows. The Gandiva bow wielded by him was indestructible and had 108 strings of celestial origins. Indrajit's knowledge of weaponry can be gauged by the fact that he was a disciple of Lord Parshuram himself. Also he was the only person to possess all the ultimate weapons of absolute annihilation of the Holy Trinity apart from Lord Parshuram. Brahmanda Astra(five times more powerful than Brahmastra), Vaishnavatsra and the Pashupatastra(possessing the power of the three eyes of Lord Shiva). His arsenal also possessed the dangerous Nagpaash and the infallible and irrefutable Shakti weapon which he always used as a last resort. Battling Style: Both Indrajit and Arjun were undoubtedly champion archers and warriors beyond excellence during their respective eras. Arjuna defeated his opponents during battle and destroyed them when fuelled by rage or vengeance. Such was the superiority of his skills as a warrior. He during the Virat War single-handedly defeated the Kuru forces headed by Bhishma, Karna, Drona, Ashwatthama, Kripa, Duryodhan and Dussashan. On the other hand, Indrajit seemed to add another dimension to the battlefield. His skills as an expert sorcerer and his ability of aerial warfare (not once but twice) baffled warriors of Lord Shri Ram, Lakshmana and Hanumanji's stature. Defeating Lord Indra: Arjuna had defeated Indra during the Khandava Dahan episode but he had Sri Krishna with him whose mere presence in any form is the guarantee of victory though, it does not tarnish Arjun's gallantry in any form. After all, not everyone is capable of wielding the Gandiva let alone use it successfully. Now, regarding the war when demon king Ravana had decided to conquer the three worlds and he was amidst a pitched battle with the Devas. The unfathomably powerful Ravana had been struck down by Indra and captured. Meghnad an adolescent on the threshold of his youth used his sorcery and war-skills to free his father. A tusk of the mighty Airavat elephant was pulled out and its rider Lord Indra was thrown down to earth! He took Lord Indra as a prisoner and advanced to Lanka. To preserve the order in heaven, Lord Brahma intervened and bestowed Meghnad with the title of Indrajit "The Vanquisher of Indra". Clearly, Indrajit has an edge over Arjuna in all aspects. If the fight was limited on the ground, Indrajit's mere status as an Atimaharathi would be enough to curb Arjuna's efforts. Let us assume that Arjuna forces Indrajit on the back foot with his prowess. Indrajit would resort to his sorcery which even Lord Rama and Lakshman along with Bajrangbali and the entire Vanara army found difficult to face. So, Arjuna alone would never defeat him if he took the aerial route. However, if the Krishna factor comes into play, Arjun's victory would be guaranteed.
