Rep. Kevin Kiley to leave Republican Party, run as independent

Northern California Congressman Kevin Kiley said he did not give GOP leadership in Washington a heads-up that he planned to leave the party and run for re-election as a “no party preference” candidate. Kiley announced on Monday that he'll be an independent for the remainder of his term in Congress. Kiley now represents the 3rd Congressional District, which was split into parts of six districts after voters passed Proposition 50. Earlier this month, Kiley announced he would run for re-election in District 6, which includes Roseville, Rocklin, and Orangevale. He’ll face off against Democrats that include former State Sen. Dr. Richard Pan, Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero, and Republican Christine Bish. The longtime Republican told reporters on Monday that he didn’t speak with "party leadership or anyone associated with either party" before making his decision for an independent candidacy.
