With the firm conviction that abstract art should be accessible and appreciated by the general public, in 1938 he created Nicholson Wall, a fresco in the garden of Sutton Place in Guildford, Surrey. Born April 10, 1894 in Denham, Buckingshire, England, to painters Sir William Nicholson and Mabel Pryde, Nicholson's early paintings were still lifes and figurative landscapes influenced by his father's work. After becoming familiar with Cubism and visiting the studios of Picasso, Braque, Arp, Brancusi and Mondrian in Paris, Nicholson's work evolved into an interest in structure, eventually turning to abstraction. His paintings from this period are characterized by geometric shapes, linearity and white reliefs carved with right angles and circles made from wood and synthetic cardboard. After the start of the Second World War, Nicholson and his family moved from London to St. Ives in Cornwall, where he moved from the linearity and severity of his early works to still lifes and abstract landscapes, influenced by cubism. He received the prestigious Carnegie Prize in 1952 and the Order of Merit in 1968. Nicholson died on February 6, 1982 in Hampstead, London.
