The Fair brings together some of the best galleries from around the world, presenting work from both internationally renowned artists and emerging artists breaking new ground. The Fair also features curated sections dedicated to photography, video art, contemporary music art and its Museum Partner, New Hall Art Collection. PHOTO50 - NO PLACE IS AN ISLAND This year’s Photo50 exhibition, No Place is an Island, presents a selection of works by 14 contemporary British and UK-based photographers, each of whom bring a unique perspective to the exhibition’s subject matter and work in a variety of photographic formats and materials. The exhibition, which is curated by Rodrigo Orrantia, aims to interrogate what it means to be an island and to imagine its multiple possibilities towards the future. The selection focuses on practices that experiment with the boundaries of photography, sculpture and performance, often referencing British photographic history as a context for their approach to the medium. ________________________________________________________________________ PLATFORM - MUSIC AND CONTEMPORARY ART For this year’s annual themed section, guest curator Candida Stevens has chosen Music and its part in Contemporary Art, working with 10 galleries whose artists have created new work exploring the intersection of visual art and music, and the ways in which contemporary art can incorporate aspects of movement and rhythm. The display will range from abstract work referencing the riff of jazz music with off-key colour and off-kilter form to figurative artists representing the process of composition across both art forms. Dimitrios Skyllas will build further on the theme of art and music by performing a piano recital from Abyss, created in response to artist Matt Smith’s ceramic piece ‘Notes of a love song’ which will be exhibited at Platform. ________________________________________________________________________ MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP - LARGEST COLLECTION OF ART BY WOMEN IN EUROPE The New Hall Art Collection is a permanent collection of modern and contemporary art by women at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge. The exhibition Myth-Making and Self-Fashioning: Women Artists from the New Hall Art Collection presents over 20 artists including Maggi Hambling, Paula Rego, Gayle Chong Kwan, Rose Wylie and Miriam Schapiro from the largest collection of art by women in Europe. The works on display, which include paintings, photographs, textiles and ceramics, will focus on two themes - myth-making and self-fashioning. ________________________________________________________________________ LOCKDOWN ART The pandemic had a sudden and substantial impact on the arts and culture sector, with theatres, music venues, and galleries around the world forced to close their doors for months. During this period, artists found new and creative ways to document this time, which has resulted in meaningful new works and initiatives, some of which will be presented during London Art Fair. Examples of these works include: ● Represented by Cavaliero Finn, London based artist David Edmond has created a series of street paintings of deserted music venues which had been closed for a year reflecting on the absence of live gigs and performances during lockdown. ● Austrian artist Jari Genser’s work, presented by Kunst ab Hinterhof, presents his view of his art studio in 2020 whilst he regularly listens to updates on a Coronavirus focused podcast. ● Charlie Smith Gallery will dedicate a wall to their lockdown initiative PROJECT PAPYROPHILIA which has been hugely successful, selling nearly 500 pieces and has been hailed by artists as an initiative that helped them to survive during the pandemic. ________________________________________________________________________
