This hymn was composed by Theodulf of Orléans who was born about 750AD in Spain. Early in life, Theodulf fled Spain because of Moorish occupation in the reign of Charlemagne and went to Aquitaine, where he received his early education. He joined the Monastery and fell in love with education, schooling, learning and so encouraged establishment of public schools and Monastery. He became a key member of the reformation of the church and in 1798 he was appointed bishop of Orléans during the reign of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. However, the nephew of Lious - King Bernard of Italy dethroned him as bishop and banished him. Theodulf died in 821AD while trying to get back his bishopric position. He wrote many Capitularies, hymns, texts and literary works including the famous libray caloreny. This hymn was translated to English by John Mason Neale(1818-1866)
