One Health and Comparative Medicine in Medical Research

Reed Dimmitt, MD, DVM, MSPH is Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed undergraduate studies and earned his DVM in 1982 at the University of Missouri. He practiced small animal emergency medicine in St. Louis until 1992. He obtained his MD from Saint Louis University in 1996. He completed a Pediatric residency and fellowship in Neonatology in 2001. He was appointed to the faculty at UAB in the Division of Neonatology in 2001. His research focus was in a necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Dr. Dimmitt’s study into NEC included both clinical and basic science research. In 2009, Dr. Dimmitt competed a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at UAB and now serves as the Director of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at UAB/Children’s of Alabama. Renee Chambers, DVM, MD is a Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Medicine. As a veterinarian and neurosurgeon, Dr. Chambers is a strong proponent of the One Health Initiative, an effort to improve animal and public health worldwide and strengthen medicine by working together. She is the founder of the Alabama Comparative Oncology Network, principal investigator of the Southeastern Comparative Oncology Network, and founding member of the Comparative Brain Tumor Consortium at the Center for Cancer Research, NIH National Cancer Institute - each a collaboration of veterinary and medical scientists and clinicians working together to identify genetic targets for treatment of disease through comparative genomics. Dr. Chambers is the principal investigator "CANINE," a canine immunotherapy trial, a collaboration between neuroscientists and clinicians at UAB and regional colleges of veterinary medicine funded by the NIH as part of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative to support cancer research.
