(10 Oct 1995) English/Nat Chinese American activist Harry Wu Monday urged France to ban imports of products made by prisoners in Chinese jails. Wu was speaking at a Paris news conference organised by France Libertes, a human rights foundation headed by former first lady Danielle Mitterrand. Wu, who spent 19 years in China's labour camps, denounced the sale of items made by Chinese prisoners as immoral. Barely two months after his latest spell in a Chinese jail, Harry Wu was on the warpath once again. He joined France's former first lady Danielle Mitterrand at a news conference organised by the human rights foundation France Libertes. Wu highlighted the plight of around eight (m) million prisoners working in Chinese labour camps or laogai. The fruits of their labour often find their way to French shops and Wu's message to the French government was unequivocal. SOUNDBITE: "I urge today that the French national assembly pass laws banning the import of forced labour products from China." While it was not illegal for France to sell these products, Wu said it was "immoral". He also had harsh words for the communist regime in China. He returned to China in 1991 and filmed the labour camps with a hidden camera. The abuses he uncovered were later broadcast by several foreign television stations. Wu was arrested in China in June for allegedly disclosing state secrets and was later convicted. Following an international outcry, he was expelled from China in August after spending 66 days in detention.
