Welcome to the Queen Steam Star of the Northeast’s Kick Off Tour 2025 Program, featuring Nickel Plate Road 765 as it traverses Northern Ohio and Northwestern Indiana. Beginning on April 22, 2025, Viloco Valve Productions & I documented NKP 765 as it navigates the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Company for the first time in a decade. The journey will conclude at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, where the Berkshire will once again participate in Steam In The Valley. Initially, it will travel through the NS Fostoria District enroute to Bellevue, OH, before transitioning onto the W&LE's Hartland Subdivision, where it will operate independently due to the absence of PTC requirements on these lines. The locomotive will connect with the Akron Subdivision at Spencer, OH, and continue to Akron for interchange with the CVSR. After the transfer, it will be towed by LTEX 1448 to it's ultimate destination of the Fitzwater Yard in Brecksville, OH. This day represents the realization of two goals: witnessing the return of the Berkshire on the Wheeling and experiencing the beloved music of the 1980s for the first time. Not only that, what we were in store for. With the return of Steam in the Valley after a multi-year hiatus, I will attend opening day on Friday, April 25, accompanied by C Henderson Rail Productions, Lane's Trains, and Middle Tennessee Rail Productions. Due to significant rainfall, the first two excursions on Saturday, April 26, were cancelled because of elevated water levels. However, the water levels unexpectedly decreased, allowing for the final excursion of the day. VVP would participate in the remainder of the SITV Events. This will conclude coverage for the first weekend, while the second weekend will include the evening excursion on May 3 and the closing day on May 4 for Steam In The Valley. Despite overcast skies and potential rain on Monday, May 5, the steam locomotive will be positioned in a nostalgic location by day’s end. On Monday, May 5, the Queen Steam Star was set to travel the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad again, reaching the interchange with the Wheeling & Lake Erie. Due to unforeseen delays from track work, it would traverse the remainder of the Akron Sub before transitioning to the Cleveland Sub later hours of the day, enroute to Brewster, OH. Evoking nostalgia for the 765, which last visited Brewster in 1982, but this will mark the first time in 68 years that a steam locomotive has traveled the CLE Sub. On Saturday, May 10th, the inaugural set of steam locomotive employee specials on the W&LE took place, marking a significant milestone since the establishment of the railroads in 1990. Three trips were made to New Cumberland, OH, allowing one spot per run. Witnessing the 765 operate at mainline track speeds evoked fond memories of the 21st Century Steam Program from the past decade. The realization of this project was another notable achievement for the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, highlighting collaborations with the W&LE and the Age of Steam Roundhouse. On May 12th, this monumnetal phase of the Berkshire’s stay in Ohio will sadly conclude, as the locomotive, accompanied by NKP EMD SD9 358, will depart from HQ and travel to the Indiana Northeastern Railroad for the Indiana Rail Experience. We received an unexpected addition, Norfolk Southern’s Heritage Unit, Nickel Plate Road 8100, which will lead on NS trackage along the Fostoria District from Bellevue OH. At Fort Wayne, a shoving maneuver was performed onto the Huntingdon District in Fort Wayne, IN. This operation allowed the Heritage Unit to proceed in Hammerhead Style/Long Hood Forward to the interchange in Montpelier, OH, with the INER, to allow 765 and its consist would to decouple and go. Now the Iron Horse operating independently throughout the night, she would create an outstanding experience. This will not be the last occasion to document the Queen Steam Star of the Northeast, as filming of the Tri-State Excursions took place. One of the days will feature the whistle of American Freedom Train #250/Reading T1 #2100, as we approach daily operations of the engine.
