The People's Blueprint for a BetterSocial Media: From the Platform Accountability Lab

This session brings together diverse voices to reflect on what social media means today and what it could become. Through an open, participatory discussion, participants share the single word they associate with social media, ranging from creativity and connection to surveillance, misinformation, and control. Moving beyond critique, the session invites everyone to collectively reimagine alternative social media models grounded in four core values: Transparency, Safety, Data Ownership, and Justice. From clearer ad disclosures and accessible safety settings to fair data use, mental health support, age-appropriate platforms, and accountability in grievance redressal, the discussion explores what these values could look like in real life. The workshop also highlights how social media can support livelihoods, education, community building, and social justice if designed responsibly. Through group activities and shared ideas, participants co-create a people-led blueprint for platforms that respect rights, protect well-being, and give users real control. This is not just a conversation about what’s broken but a collective effort to imagine and build better digital spaces, together.
