David Cohn, MD, Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the OSUCCC—James, Ohio State’s comprehensive cancer center, describes the symptoms and methods for detecting ovarian cancer, which is relatively rare, but often diagnosed in later stages. He also discusses the CA125 blood test, which is not appropriate as a screening tool, but is used to monitor a patient’s response to chemotherapy. If a woman does suspect ovarian cancer—symptoms may include abdominal pain or bloating as well as changes in bowel or urination habits—she is encouraged to visit her primary care physician for initial screening and further evaluation, which may include a pelvic ultrasound.
