Wenbo Zhao, MD, PhD, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China, discusses ongoing research into remote ischemic conditioning as a strategy to mitigate infarct growth and promote recovery in acute ischemic stroke. The non-invasive treatment involves repeated cycles of ischemia and reperfusion, thought to protect tissue from damage during and after prolonged ischemia. Dr Zhao highlights a 2022 study published in JAMA, which found that remote ischemic conditioning significantly increased the likelihood of excellent neurologic function at 90 days, compared to usual care. His group is currently conducting several clinical trials, including one on remote ischemic conditioning alongside thrombectomy for anterior circulation strokes. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
