A relaxing Autumn P.O.V walk from the Iron Bridge, which is tucked away in the rolling hills of Shropshire, Telford. Here lies a town steeped in industrial heritage and natural beauty. From the pioneering Iron Bridge to the rushing Jackfield Rapids, this corner of England offers a fascinating blend of history, engineering marvels, and scenic river landscapes. We start at the Iron Bridge which is a Monument to Innovation from the industrial revolution. Built in 1779, the Iron Bridge was the world’s first bridge made entirely of cast iron, a revolutionary feat at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard and constructed by Abraham Darby III, it spans the River Severn in the Ironbridge Gorge and is a symbol of British ingenuity. Today, the bridge is a Grade I listed structure and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing visitors from around the globe. It’s not just a bridge it’s a gateway to understanding how Britain transformed into an industrial powerhouse. Next we head along the River Severn: The lifeblood of the Gorge Flowing through the heart of Telford, the River Severn is the longest river in the UK, stretching over 220 miles from the Welsh mountains to the Bristol Channel. In Telford, it carves through the dramatic Ironbridge Gorge, shaping both the landscape and the town’s industrial legacy. The river is a haven for wildlife, anglers, and walkers. Its banks host historic sites, museums, and nature trails, making it a central thread in the tapestry of Telford’s past and present. We then pass over the Free Bridge at Jackfield which lies just downstream. This lesser known but equally charming structure, was originally built to provide toll-free access across the Severn, The Iron bridge was still charging up until 1950. The bridge known locally as the Jackfield Bridge, was constructed in response to the limitations of the Iron Bridge, which had become increasingly impractical for modern traffic. By the early 20th century, the Iron Bridge’s narrow deck and toll charges were seen as barriers to progress. The Free Bridge was designed to accommodate larger vehicles and free movement, reflecting the changing needs of the region’s economy and infrastructure. Built in 1909, the original Free Bridge was a steel truss structure supported by stone abutments. It was engineered to withstand the River Severn’s frequent flooding and to serve both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Over the decades, the bridge underwent several refurbishments to maintain safety and usability. In the early 1990s, the original structure was replaced with a modern steel bridge, designed to preserve the historical significance while meeting contemporary standards. The new bridge retained the name and purpose of the original, continuing to serve as a vital link between Jackfield and Ironbridge. We then finish the walk at the Jackfield Rapids. A Rush of Adventure for thrill seekers and paddlers, the Jackfield Rapids offer a short but exhilarating stretch of whitewater on the River Severn. Located near the Free Bridge, this section is popular with canoeists and kayakers looking to test their skills. Telford’s bridges and riverways aren’t just functional, they’re living monuments to Britain’s industrial story. Whether you’re crossing the Iron Bridge, wandering by the Free Bridge, navigating the Jackfield Rapids, or simply soaking in the serenity of the River Severn, you’re walking through history. ------ chapters --- 0:00 Holy Trinity Church 0:30 The Iron Bridge and The village 9:01 Along River Severn Trail 12:15 climbing tree's 17:02 along River Severn 24:50 Free Bridge 48:00 Noble fool Statue 31:10 Jackfield Rapids About the Channel Subscribers at time of video recording: 10 This is a Channel to show the vast and varying beauty the West Midlands has to offer from inner city urban areas, city nature reserves or the outstanding natural beauty of the country side, All is present in the midlands, Well also have some further flung visits planned just because its a big world to explore and experience.
