Various of Tymoshenko and choir singing on stage STORYLINE Ukrainian politicians were making their final appeals to voters on Friday ahead of a weekend parliamentary election that has been called to end a long-standing political deadlock between the nation's feuding president and premier. The two leaders' parties and the bloc led by fiery opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko are expected to split the vote, leading to complicated talks on forming a coalition government. AP Television footage showed two elaborate evening rallies, one for Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and another for Tymoshenko on Friday evening. The Party of Regions, led by Yanukovych, is likely to get the most votes in the Sunday elections, giving him a strong chance of becoming premier. But Tymoshenko, a former prime minister and heroine of the Orange Revolution mass protests that swept the pro-Western Yushchenko to power, is also a likely candidate for the premier's job. Tymoshenko's party is expected to come second, trailed by the pro-Yushchenko Our Ukraine People's Self defence bloc: the two forces combined could garner more seats in the Verkhovna Rada than Yanukovych's force. Yushchenko has called for unity between the once-estranged Orange forces, hinting he could support Tymoshenko as prime minister. On Thursday the pair expressed support for the union during a meeting, greeting each other with a hug and kiss. Ukrainian politics have become ever more tangled following Yushchenko's victory in 2004. The appointment of his then close ally Tymoshenko as prime minister was short lived, he fired her in 2005. In 2006 Yanukovych's party gained the most seats in parliamentary elections, became prime minister and has fought his arch rival Yushchenko ever since. Analysts remain sceptical the vote will bring an end to the political gridlock that has paralysed Ukraine's government for months. They say the constitution doesn't clearly explain the division of executive power between the president and premier, and both Yushchenko and Yanukovych have struggled for dominance. The deadlock is likely to continue until the constitution is changed to clarify who is in charge of what, experts said.
