Merit Award of Excellence for Historic Preservation and Restoration Johann Fust Community Library Boca Grande, Florida Funded by a private endowment, this Library designed by Henry Richardson Shepley opened its doors January 1, 1950. The courtyard and loggia have served as a venue for weddings, meetings and public gatherings. In recent years the Library’s continued deterioration and disrepair led to declining use and degraded aesthetic appeal. The primary goal for the project was to return the Library to its position of importance and service in the community. Consistent with the building’s history of open air reading and outdoor circulation, the solution utilizes the original ancillary spaces accessed through the courtyard to increase the size and functionality of the Library. As a result of the improvements, the Library has has been restored to its historical purpose. The jury said “although it started with compelling architecture, what the architect has done has truly expressed what was there and made it even better by refocusing the design.”
